Naheed Akhtar’s Singing Career

Naheed Akhtar started her career in 1970 by singing with Khalid Asghar in a song called Raag Malhar at Radio Pakistan in Multan. She sang many songs for Pakistani movies, pop songs, ghazals, old Pakistani music, Punjabi folk music, qawwalis, naats, and Hamds. In the mid-1970s, a famous music director, M. Ashraf, noticed her and helped her start singing for movies. She didn’t have a famous teacher for music, but M. Ashraf was very important in teaching her.

Her first movie, Nanha Farishta, came out in 1974, and she also sang in the movie Shama that year. At first, people thought she was singing because Runa Laila had left for Bangladesh, but soon they saw that Nahid had her special way of singing. She kept singing for Pakistani movies until the 1980s. As a playback singer, which means her voice was used for songs in movies, Nahid sang 590 songs for 436 movies in Urdu and Punjabi.
